In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
