British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
