The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Unraveling?
Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist a binding element holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence
At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.
He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Uncovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the exact type of his skill set. Billed as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
