Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also included leaders in different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
